A Helping of Pi
It certainly appears to us that the length of the container is greater than the distance around the lid (perimeter).
But, appearances can be deceiving.....
The container is just long enough to contain 3 balls.
Therefore it is three times the diameter of a tennis ball.
The diameter of the container is the same as the diameter of a tennis ball.
Ther perimeter is therefore pi times the diameter.
So, the length is 3x Diameter
and the perimeter is 3.14 x Diameter so, the distance around the edge of the lid is longer than the length.
Generally, we are not good at judging the length of curved lines. Check this out with a tube of crisps or a tall glass. (such as a Pringles container). See which looks longer - length or perimeter. Then measure them with a (tape measure, piece of string, piece of paper.)
