A Statistical (Monte Carlo) and Interactive Approach Towards Introducing Integration in Leaving Certificate Calculus by Michael Mc Carthy

This lecture offers the opportunity to present aspects of Calculus to Leaving Certificate students in a highly interactive fashion towards establishing an intuitive understanding of what Calculus is, and how useful it can be as a mathematical instrument. The concept of Integral Calculus is introduced using a statistical (“Monte Carlo”) approach, that is employed quite often by computers to solve mathematical problems involving Calculus. Students are invited to interactively “compute” solutions to problems by throwing small objects within a closed space and using webcam snapshots to yield a result.
