Charlie Gilderdale NRICH Post Primary STUDENT WORKSHOP

During this workshop students will have the opportunity to develop the skills of conjecturing, generalising, justifying and proving – key processes at the heart of mathematical thinking. By tackling challenging and sometimes intriguing problems collectively and reflecting on alternative strategies, students may gain useful insights that can extend the bounds of their individual mathematical capability. This workshop will suit students who enjoy thought-provoking questions and the pleasures of insight and convincing arguments. The workshop will be based on problems published on the NRICH website

NRICH is a very successful  joint project between the Faculties of Mathematics and Education at The University of Cambridge  which has developed excellent materials to enrich mathematical learning(  For example:

  • NRICH publishes a monthly issue of free mathematical enrichment material and offers an archive of accessible and rich mathematical resources.
  • The NRICH resources encourage creative approaches to mathematical thinking and problem solving, and can be used by learners of all ages.
  • The sense of an online mathematical community is fostered by the publication of solutions sent to the site and by the online discussion and mentoring service offered by Ask NRICH.

As  part of maths week 2011 the national organisers of  Maths week has arranged for Charlie Gilderdale , one of the top presenters from NRICH, to conduct a series of one hour  student workshops  ( capacity 30 students per workshop) on Tuesday 18th October in IT Tallaght. The workshops will focus on activities that challenge students to think mathematically and   activities that enrich students’ experience of mathematics. The workshops will suit secondary school students of any year. Interested schools should contact Jeannette Kelly  on 4042744  or at   for further information. Early booking is advised. Sessions will be held at 10, 11, 12, 13.45 and 14.45.
