Pierre de Fermat was a French mathematician of the 17th century, whose notebooks contained some fascinating but incomplete proofs to many new theorems. Later mathematicians proved 48 of them, but one remained elusive, his so called Last Theorem. As more and more mathematicians tried and failed to prove this apparently simple problem, it gained notoriety. This short talk gives a flavour of the efforts of those who tried and failed and of the man who ultimately succeeded in proving Fermat's last Theorem.
