Arithmetic is the oldest and most elementary branch of mathematics, used by almost everyone, for tasks ranging from simple day-to-day counting to advanced science and business calculations. The golfer Padraig Harrington has recently changed his swing. Recently I have made a similar fundamental change in my working life in that I  learned an alternative way to add, subtract, multiply and divide. In this talk I will explain why I did this and what is involved and will try to convince you to do the same. We will also trawl through some quirky aspects of numbers from beauty pageant contestents to how to square a five-digit number in your head.
